Google Photos v1.2 for Android Brings New Album Features and More

Google, after introducing the 'Your Timeline' feature in Google Maps, has now updated its Google Photos service, bumping the app version to 1.2. The updated app lets users easily add images to albums, create photo descriptions, and pick an album cover. The updated app so far has only been released for Android, with no word of when it will reach iOS.

Google Photos v1.2 now lets users easily add individual images to albums using the simple drop-down menu, which now comes with an additional option - Add to album. The other options previously included in the drop-down menu are Slideshow, Set as, and Download.

When opening an image in an album, users would also get the option to set the image as album cover straight from the drop-down. Users can also finally add an image description. The description can be added by tapping on the information button at the bottom right corner of the image.

The Google Photos v1.2 app has not yet rolled out to Google Play, however impatient readers can download the Google-signed apk (via Android Police) to sideload the update app.

The Mountain View-based tech giant earlier this week announced that it would be shutting down the Google+ Photos service on August 1 in favour of recently launched Google Photos. The company revealed that Google+ Photos shutdown will begin with Android initially, followed by Web and iOS. The company added that users can still access the stores photos and videos using the new Google Photos service, as long as they download and start using the new app before the deadline.

To recall, Google at its I/O annual developers' conference in May unveiled its standalone service Google Photos that lets users store photos and videos for free. The service was made available for Android, iOS and the Web.
