WhatsApp getting updated with a myriad of new features including custom notifications

WhatsApp is gearing up to send an update to the Android version of its popular IM client, which will bring improved notifications handling to the fore. Apart from being able to mark messages as unread (as rumored before), users will now get an extensive menu to handle notifications from specific contacts.

This feature allows you to have a custom notification tone for each contact or group, which will help you distinguish between important and unnecessary messages.

The 'Mark as unread' setting can be obtained by long pressing on a conversation from the Chats menu. This is merely a self reminding feature if you want to read a conversation sometime later. The feature doesn't in any away impact the messages that your contacts might have already read.

In addition to these features, WhatsApp is also adding a low data usage setting to voice calls, which will ensure that minimal data is used while making voice calls on the app. It's a good feature to have, especially if you rely on WhatsApp voice calling while on the go.

It seems like the update is limited to Android for the time being, but it goes without saying that an iOS version is in development as well. Although the update notification is yet to go live on Android, users can grab the apk file manually from APK Mirror (link below).

Local WhatsApp, Viber, Skype calls may no longer be free

A high-level government committee has upheld the concept of net neutrality, but its recommendations have raised some major concerns for consumers and startups. Those hooked to applications like WhatsApp, Skype and Viber may no longer be able to make free domestic calls (barring negligible data charges) through these voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services. However, instant messaging and international calls through these services will remain free, if these recommendations are implemented.

The Uber addiction – why the taxi app is driving me crazy

Bring up the subject of the world’s biggest, most unscrupulous tech companies, and many people will mention the low level of corporation tax paid by online behemoths in the UK (just slashed from 20% to 18% by 2020 in George Osborne’s budget). Or they’ll talk about how Amazon is squeezing independent bookshops and paying self-published authors a pittance – as little as $0.006 per page read. Perhaps there will be handwringing over the state of Foxconn, the biggest supplier of Apple products. In Foxconn factories in China, workers average around 55 hours a week, and conditions are so poor that in 2010 alone 14 workers killed themselves.

Paytm unveils P2P fund transfers

Seeing the huge potential of cashless transactions through e-wallet, mobile payments and commerce venture Paytm is the latest company to jump on the person-to-person (P2P) money transfer bandwagon.

After online shopping, this space has seen good traction with mobile payment firms like M-Pesa and Oxigen, and certain banks joining the fray, to offer ease and convenience of the cashless mode and promote cash-less and paperless transactions while making merchant payments. While banks have deployed point-of-sales (PoS) terminals at various merchant outlets and launched mobile payment apps, others like Vodafone M-Pesa launched a mobile app recently to carry out transactions like cash deposits, money transfers, and make mobile and utility bill payments.
